The newest Lowry title features a community of church mice leading a discreet existence for their own safety and security. Hildegarde, the Mouse Mistress, keeps stern but caring watch over all of them. With potential dangers such as the Blessing of the Animals looming (there may be CATS!) and ensuring no accidental sightings (might set traps or worse!), she has quite a lot to handle. Rest assured this apparently sweet story may have a little more to it than meets the eye. It is Lois Lowry after all. These mice are true characters, and you will recognize yourselves or neighbors in many of them. The ways that mice are “handled” is spelled out clearly. This would be a good book for discussion as well as those readers that are transitioning to meatier subjects. Ms. Lowry also tosses in a happy dose of history and useful vocabulary to stretch the brain a little, something that I absolutely love about her work.

Most folks know Ms. Lowry for her Newbery titles, but I am a fan of her snarky titles such as The Willoughbys. Her latest, The Birthday Ball, is a funny tale of Princess Patricia Priscilla. The well-read princess is to be betrothed at her 16th birthday ball to one of three (or maybe four) disgusting suitors. These suitors are described in their disgusting lack of glory including their horrible personality flaws, horrific appearances and terrible odors. On top of all of this, the poor princess is just so BORED with royal life. It is great fun to follow her as she sneaks into the village and samples the pleasures of peasant life. The satisfying conclusion has everyone getting exactly what they deserve at the Birthday Ball.

Jacki is a Southern California girl who really has not been paying much attention to her 9th grade social studies class. All the lectures about recession and unemployment aren’t terribly interesting until it all starts to happen at home. Private school, her sister’s college and soon her family home may all disappear when her mom gets laid off. How does a girl handle a broken leg, new responsibilities, and meeting a great guy when her world is changing so dramatically? Luckily the drama is handled with a light and clever touch by Ms. Koss. The book is sweet and funny, with charming characters. A perfect read with topical insight, and not just if you’re from Southern California!

The fact that Rosemary Wells writes incredibly well-researched historical fiction is a secret best known by Indie booksellers. "On the Blue Comet" shows her talent at a new level. Oscar Ogilvie witnesses the crash of 1929 first hand. He loses a little more of his normal life each day, including his father and beloved trains. But when a friend lets him visit his old train set, Oscar takes a magical journey through time. The exquisite art by Bagram Ibatoulline is rich and absorbing as well, making this a wonderful book to share.

With the voice of an angel, Retta Lee Jones has big dreams for a small town girl. Talent is not the only thing a girl needs to become a country music star. Upon graduating from high school, she knows she needs to come up with a lot more than her talent to make it big. With bright shiny moments and devastating blows she makes her way in Nashville…for a time. Along the way she finds people that are amazingly kind and people that crush her dreams. She knows she may end up a small town girl, but she has to at least try to make the dreams come true. Retta’s story of negotiating that time between the dreams of a teen and the realities of an adult is the perfect blend of hope and heartache.

Of course I would never judge a book by its cover, but in the case of "Oogy", I can't say no. With his soulful eyes staring out from the cover, "Oogy" begs to be taken home. With his name being an endearing form of ugly, you cannot call him a handsome dog, but his story is sweet, touching, and appropriate to share with younger readers. A story with pathos, love, kindness and adoption, "Oogy" will be loved by dog lovers and families instantly. This one will be first on my list of books to give for the holidays.
