“If you’re writing, then you’re a writer,” says keynote speaker Stephen Chbosky, author of The Perks of Being A Wallflower, during the Q & A session moderated by Book Fest organizer Courtney Saldana. May 11th marked the third year of the festival and my has it grown! Fourteen authors gathered at Chaffey High School in Ontario to share their thoughts and experiences and, especially, their love for books. With each of the authors appearing at three different panels, it was possible to see every one of them throughout the day. Or you could see the same author and never hear the same thing twice.

Sad Desk Salad (Paperback)$14.99 ISBN-13: 9780062188342Availability: On Our Shelves Now Published: William Morrow Paperbacks, 10/2012 The title is what caught my eye first: I too find salads eaten at one's desk to be unbearably tragic. Then I saw the author's name and the fact that she is a former blogger for Gawker media, and a light bulb went on over my head: she used to write for Jezebel! She wrote a book based on Jezebel! I opened it up and was hooked; it's official: this smart, funny book based on my favorite blog has me wanting more! Red Rain (Hardcover)$24.99 ISBN-13: 9781451636123Availability: On Our Shelves Now Published: Touchstone, 10/2012 Let me start off by saying that I never read the Goosebumps series as a child: the colorfully macabre covers both fascinated and repulsed me, I knew they were much too scary for me! Now, as an adult, I am regretting my wimpiness, for R.L. Stine crafts a fantastically scary novel! His first, but hopefully not last, thriller for adults is creepy and engrossing, with characters that stay with you long after the story is finished. Told from alternating viewpoints, "The Middlesteins" chronicles a family in crisis, all revolving around the matriarch, who simply cannot stop eating. My only complaint was that the book wasn't long enough, I wanted to keep reading for ages! I will definitely be keeping an eye out for this talented author! The Art Forger (Hardcover)$23.95 ISBN-13: 9781616201326Availability: On Our Shelves Now Published: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, 10/2012 Not only was this a fantastically crafted mystery, it's an interesting exploration of the art world and the art forging world. Shapiro created in-depth characters who occasionally broke my heart, and painted such lush descriptions of imagined works of art, I wished they were real! A beautiful and engrossing read! The Secret Keeper (Hardcover)$26.99 ISBN-13: 9781439152805Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Atria Books, 10/2012 Not only does Kate Morton create compelling, realistic characters, and paint lush landscapes that pop off the page, she writes a story that twists and turns and genuinely kept me guessing! I love all her books, each one a little better than the last, and I can't wait to see what she comes up with next! Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Hardcover)$25.00 ISBN-13: 9780374214913Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days Published: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 10/2012 I LOVE THIS BOOK! These are perfect spooky Halloween reads - and there are more to come! Velveteen (Hardcover)$17.99 ISBN-13: 9780385742245Availability: On Our Shelves Now Published: Delacorte Books for Young Readers, 10/2012 Mark's debut novel is wonderfully dark and gory - how could it not be, given that it's set in Purgatory? Velveteen is a tough heroine, hell-bent (deliberate pun!) on punishing the serial killer who murdered her and saving other potential victims, as well as protecting the world she lives in now. "Velveteen" had me in its bloody grip from page one and I'm dying (second pun!) for the sequel! Passenger (Hardcover)$17.99 ISBN-13: 9781250004871Availability: On Our Shelves Now Published: Feiwel & Friends, 10/2012 I sat down with Andrew Smith's newest on a dark and stormy night, the perfect setting for one of his twisted tales - and what a twisted tale it was! Jack (from "The Marbury Lens") is back and so is Marbury, in all it's bloody glory. But it's a different version of Marbury and Jack must fight his way through many "Inception"-like layers of reality, each more horrifying than the last, to find his way home - but will it be the same world he left? "Passenger" is gloriously dark, grim, and violent, and I enjoyed every minute of the journey to hell and back! Jepp, Who Defied the Stars (Hardcover)$16.99 ISBN-13: 9781423135005Availability: On Our Shelves Now Published: Disney-Hyperion, 10/2012 Katherine Marsh's tale of Jepp, a "court dwarf" in the Middle Ages, makes for fascinating historical fiction, especially since it's based in fact. This is what Jepp must decide as he leaves home and journeys all over Europe (not always by choice). A wonderful, fascinating, tender read!
