Collecting Toys and Books for Kids - Blog Entry from Caitlin

As a first-time Aunt and avid book lover, I was thrilled to start collecting stories and original toys for my new nephew. My biggest problem was deciding which book to start with! I soon found myself collecting some classic children's books and some wonderful new picture books that are soon be classics . . .

Some necessities in any childs library is "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak. This classic, Caldecott winning book inspires children to use their imagination while transporting them to another world.

Another favorite is "Corduroy" by Don Freeman. For a teddy bear, Corduroy sure seems to get into a lot of mishaps but readers will love this adorable, endearing bear and will want to collect all the Corduroy stories!

A newer picture book that I had to buy my nephew was "The Curious Garden" by Peter Brown. I can't recommend this book enough to customers! As people overlook an abandoned railway a boy sees a place for life and nature to flourish. He soon plants himself a garden and starts to personally take care of it. While his garden grows, he inspires his neighbors around him to do the same and the forgotten railway is now a treasure among a concrete jungle. An added bonus is the remarkable art work by Peter Brown.

While my nephew is still too young to read these books by himself, children always love having books read to them- no matter the age!

I also picked up some really original and educational toys that are perfect for the 6 months and up crowd. We just got in some multi-colored  building blocks from Green Toys that are 100% recycled plastic from milk jugs. I am in love with these! They are nice big blocks and are really bright colors but babies can learn to build and stack with them and be kind to the environment.

Apple Park is a new brand that we started carrying at the store and the plush animals are too cute. My favorite are the Picnic Pal Blankies. They are half blankies and half stuffed animals and completely adorable. They too, are organic and made with sustainable materials (noticing a pattern with me??).

I know my nephew will love these books and toys and the best part is that this is just a sampling of all the fabulous things the store is carrying right now!
