I Heart Nancy Drew - a blog post from Lauren

Lauren writes:

I Heart Nancy Drew

The titian- haired teen sleuth is turning 80! I started reading Nancy Drew mysteries in third grade and I was instantly hooked. I wanted to be just like Nancy. I wanted to speed around in my blue convertible, solving mysteries and rescuing my hapless boyfriend, Ned Nickerson. I wanted to be admired for my poise, my all-American good looks, and above all, my mind. For a while I even tried to imitate Nancy’s laugh, which I imagined as a throaty chuckle. (Needless to say, that didn’t work out too well for me).

The first Nancy Drew book – The Secret of the Old Clock - came out in 1930 and it holds up well – especially since it was reissued with a cool retro cover. It’s perfect for girls who love mysteries and strong (yet stylish) heroines. A nice addition to any budding detective’s library is The Nancy Drew Sleuth Book: Clues to Good Sleuthing by Carolyn Keene. I think the title says it all! A great book for grown-up Nancy fans is Girl Sleuth by Melanie Rehak, a fascinating in-depth look at the women who wrote as Carolyn Keene.

I’ll end with a quote from the fashionable gumshoe herself: “Lipstick is not just for looking glamorous; it can be used to signal for help on windows and other surfaces”.
