Wintergirls is intense, devastating, and perhaps shocking in its accurate portrayal of eating disorders. I found myself wanting desperately to help Lia, though she is well armored against anyone's attempts to intervene. It is painful to realize (as Lia slowly does) how her illness affects everyone around her. More so as readers realize she is slipping into delusions and greater physical peril. Her former best friend has died in the beginning of the story, and the haunting presence of this lost friendship is what ultimately seals Lia’s fate.
Wintergirls is painful and realistic. It is very difficult to put down, and will follow you for days. I highly recommend it.
