Beatrice Shakespeare Smith (Bertie) has grown up in the Theatre Illuminata - a magical theater that houses all the characters of all the plays ever written. Bertie was an orphan raised in the theater, center stage. But now she is 17 and causing havoc in the theater. She has one chance to prove her usefulness to the theater or she will have to leave. She is helped along by her best friends, the fairies from A Midsummer's Night's Dream, and her love interest, a pirate from The Little Mermaid. Nearly all the inhabitants of the theater want her to stay and help her, except for Ariel (the air spirit from The Tempest) who is both friend and enemy. Trying to secure her place in the theater she faces temperamental actors, an angry sea goddess, and sudden information about the identity of her parents which leads Bertie on a wild adventure within the confines of the theater.
